Why You Need Guitar Lessons One of the most common types of students that come to my studio are beginner guitar players that tried to teach themselves, but failed to do so. Here’s why they failed and why you need to take guitar lessons over trying to teach yourself. 1) Guitar is harder than you think Guitar isn’t a “linear” instrument like piano, where all of the notes are laid out in a nice straight line. It’s a weird and awkward instrument. The margin of error is very small on guitar, which means the tiniest movement a millimeter in the wrong direction becomes the difference between a note or chord that sounds clear and beautiful vs a note or chord that just sounds ugly, muted, and wrong. 2) You can’t ask YouTube videos any questions YouTube is a great place to learn a lot of cool stuff about guitar playing, but I don’t think it’s the most effective way to learn as a beginner because you can’t get immediate feedback on whether you are doing something right vs doing something wrong. The video isn’t going to tell you if you are playing something wrong and if you don’t know what the “correct” way is supposed to look and sound like, then you are going to be in some trouble! 3) There is no one size fits all approach to learning guitar. Every student is different and needs to be taught according to their needs and goals. If you are a beginner guitar player and you don’t know anything about music, how can you possibly know what things to work on and in what order? Some teachers and books have decent methodology, but there is no one size fits all approach that works for every new guitar player. When I work with brand new guitar players with my guitar lessons in Arlington TX (I also offer guitar lessons in Mansfield Tx and guitar lessons in Fort Worth TX), the first thing I do is to assess what that student’s goals and tastes are. From there, once I start teaching them and get a better sense of what their practice habits are like and what their biggest challenges are, I create a customized lesson plan that is unique to them. The best guitar teachers in the world do the same thing. They teach the student, not just some blanket approach to learning guitar. Find them and you will be thankful that you did!
